The recent discovery of China deeply compromising the American telecom network has been called possibly the biggest cyber breach ever. It is a cyber attack on the infrastructure of America.
Telecom, Energy, Transportation, Medical, Manufacturing, Finance and Banking, the infrastructure of our society, must be protected. We don’t typically think of credit unions playing a role in our national defense, but now they do.
We think of security for the banking industry to mitigate fraud but the China hack makes clear, we as an industry, must go beyond that and implement security to protect banking as critical infrastructure of our American economy.
The threshold for “good enough” security must be reevaluated in light of recent events and increased substantially.
